Robert C. Leggett collection of Harvard ROTC memorabilia

Overview

Robert Cameron Leggett (1897-1973), an educator, was the head of the Department of Modern Languages at Thayer Academy from 1925 to 1962. The collection contains a black-and-white panoramic photograph titled “Company E-Harvard University R.O.T.C. 1917” and a certificate from Harvard University authorizing Leggett’s early graduation and leave to enlist in the United States Army during World War I.

Biographical note on Robert Cameron Leggett

Robert Cameron Leggett (1897-1973), an educator, was the head of the Department of Modern Languages at Thayer Academy from 1925 to 1962. Cameron attended Boston Public Latin School and received an AB in 1918 and EdM in 1923 from Harvard University. From Boston University, Leggett received an AM in 1940. Leggett married Helen Constance Stoner in 1924; they had two children, Lois Carol and Alan Cameron French.

After the United States entered World War I, Leggett left Harvard in June 1917 with permission from the school, to join the United States Army as an interpreter with the First Expeditionary Force. Leggett was stationed at Nevers, on the Loire, in France for two years. Leggett, a member of the Harvard College Class of 1918, returned to Harvard after the war and received his AB in 1919.

The Robert C. Leggett collection of Harvard ROTC memorabilia was acquired by the Harvard University Archives through a donation from Glenn Leggett.
