Extent

1.58 cubic feet (1 record carton, 1 extra-wide document box)

The James Rignall Wheeler personal archive consists primarily of approximately 50 blue books containing Wheeler’s lecture notes. The booklets are undated, but they appear to be his teaching notes; it is possible that the majority of these notes were generated while Wheeler was at Harvard, as many of the blue books were sold by Harvard Square shops, such as the Harvard Cooperative Society, Amee Brothers, and Charles W. Sever, with a few from the University of Vermont.

The notes' topics relate to Classical authors, such as Pindar, Aristotle, Thucydides, and Bacchylides, as well as Greek art and archeological topics, including curse inscriptions at Epidaurus, Athenian grave monuments, and Polygnotus. There are also unidentified manuscripts, comprised of loose sheets of paper with handwritten notes in Greek and English.
