Phillips Brooks correspondence and ephemera

Overview

Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) was an Episcopal preacher at Harvard University from 1881 to 1891 and a member of the Board of University Preachers from 1886 to 1891. He also served as a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers from 1870 to 1891. The collection contains six letters written by Phillips Brooks to friends and colleagues from 1875 to 1886 and a small amount of ephemera related to Brooks.

Biographical note on Phillips Brooks

Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) was an Episcopal preacher at Harvard University from 1881 to 1891 and a member of the Board of University Preachers from 1886 to 1891. He also served as a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers from 1870 to 1891. Brooks graduated from Boston Latin School in 1850 and was admitted to Harvard College in 1851 at the age of sixteen. After graduating from Harvard in 1855, he accepted a post at the Boston Latin School. Urged by his former teachers at Harvard to enter the ministry, Brooks enrolled in the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1856. Brooks served in Philadelphia as a deacon of the Church of the Advent (1859) and rector for the Holy Trinity Church (1862). He returned to Boston in 1869 as rector of the Trinity Church, remaining for the next twenty-five years. In 1891, Brooks was elected Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Massachusetts. He held this post until his death two years later.
