The collection consists of writings by Simon Smith Kuznets from 1928 to 1981. Simon Smith Kuznets (1901-1985) was the George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University from 1960 to 1971. Kuznets received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1971 for his comparative studies of the economic growth of developed and under-developed nations.

The collection consists of writings by Simon Smith Kuznets from 1928 to 1981. The bulk of the collection consists of published reprints from 1941 to 1981. Also included are talks and addresses Kuznets gave at conferences and seminars, including Reflections on the Symposium Theme, presented at a Nobel Prize Symposium in September 1974. Accompanying the writings is a bibliography, first published in 1983, and later edited by Kuznets's wife, Edith, and republished in 1989. The collection also contains book reviews (chiefly photocopies) from 1928 to 1962 and an analysis of war production written by Kuznets to the United States War Production Board in 1942.

Biographical note on Simon Smith Kuznets

Simon Smith Kuznets (1901-1985) was the George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University from 1960 to 1971. Kuznets received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1971 for his comparative studies of the economic growth of developed and under-developed nations. Kuznets received his BS (1923), MA (1924), and PhD (1926) from Columbia University. From 1925 to 1926, Kuznets studied as a Research Fellow at the Social Science Research Council. In 1927 he became a member of the research staff of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he worked until 1961. Concurrently, Kuznets was a part-time professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1931 to 1936, and a full-time professor from 1936 until 1954. In 1954, Kuznets joined the faculty at John Hopkins University, where he was Professor of Political Economy until 1960. From 1961 to his retirement in 1970, Kuznets taught at Harvard. Kuznets made considerable contributions to the transformation of economics into an empirical science and the formation of quantitative economic history.
