Paul C. Cabot personal archive

Scope and content

Collection contains a scrapbook and loose material consisting of correspondence, publications, interviews, and other material relating to Paul Codman Cabot (1898-1994), who served as Harvard Treasurer from 1948 to 1964.

The scrapbook contains news clippings, photographs, and several hand-written notes and typed letters from University administrators, including Harvard president Nathan Pusey and Donald David, and local businessmen, including Ralph Lowell, George Cutler, Roy Larsen, J. Huber Wetenhall, and Charles Mortimer. News clippings celebrate Cabot's appointment as Harvard treasurer in 1948, establishment of the Henry B. Cabot fund honoring Paul’s father in 1950, establishment of the Powell M. Cabot Professorship honoring Paul’s brother in 1960, establishment of the Paul C. Cabot Professorship in 1964, the success of the endowment during Cabot’s tenure, and his retirement in 1965. Notable items include a photograph of Paul Cabot and financier Sidney Weinberg with then-Harvard Overseer John F. Kennedy at Commencement in 1959, a photograph of Cabot with President Nathan Pusey likely taken on the same day, a letter from Pusey expressing his eagerness to work with Cabot dated June 1954, and an interview transcript from December 1961 with Cabot discussing financial strategies for Harvard. Several photographs portray Cabot at Commencement ceremonies, fundraising dinners, and at his office.

Loose items have been organized into four folders: Correspondence, Publications, Interviews, and Miscellaneous. Letters, 1968-1972, which post-date Cabot's time as Harvard treasurer, are from acquaintances including Robert H. Ebert (Dean of Harvard Medical School) and Henry Fowler (US Secretary of the Treasury under President Lyndon Johnson). Publications by and about Cabot date from 1929 to 1965. Interviews consist of a portion of one conducted by R.J. Tosiello in 1971 on Cabot’s investment strategies during his time at the State Street Corporation in the 1920s, and another more detailed interview about Cabot's life conducted by Jessica Holland in 1980.
