Sermons, circa 1923-1977

Scope and Contents

Typed transcripts of sermons written and delivered by Buttrick, and three boxes of cards serving as a catalog of them (boxes 19-21). Most of the sermons fall into series defined by Buttrick's terms of service at or visits to the following locations: Buffalo, New York, ca. 1923-1927; Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, ca. 1927-1955; Harvard University, ca. 1954-1962; Evanston and Chicago area, ca. 1959-1969; Nashville, Tennessee area, ca. 1970-1971; Louisville, Kentucky, area, ca. 1971-1977. The collection also includes three boxes (15-17) of sermons organized by subject or as special lectures; box 15 contains transcripts of Buttrick's funeral prayers and services. Most of the sermons are identified by title and Biblical text, but are arranged by serial number according to location and date. The three index card boxes (19-21) cross-reference the sermons alphabetically by location, Biblical text, and Special Addresses delivered at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and Harvard.
