Scope and Contents

Bound volume of "B" copies of outgoing correspondence written by Harlow Shapley, mostly relating to Observatory business and scientific information, particularly variable nebula. The majority of the correspondents are Shapley's astronomy colleagues, from the United States and abroad, including Harry Henley Plaskett, John Stanley Plaskett, Edwin Hubble, Frank Schlesinger, Donald Howard Menzel, Joel Stebbins, and many others. Also includes letters to various Harvard professors and departments, such as chemistry professor George Sarton, astronomy professor Solon Irving Bailey, zoology professor George R. Agassiz, library Director Archibald Cary Coolidge, and Radcliffe College. Topics of discussion include Observatory equipment, the Annals of the Harvard College Observatory publication, Observatory staff members, Shapley's involvement with the American Association of Variable Star Observers, the employment of Cecilia Payne (Gaposchkin), and news from the Boyden Station Observatory in Arequipa, Peru.
