Historical note on Washington's New England tour

George Washington embarked on a tour of New England from October 15 to November 13, 1789, visiting about 60 towns in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. He completed a tour of the southern states in 1791. One aim of Washington's travels was to generate support for the new federal government and the Constitution, which at the time of the New England trip had been ratified by only eleven states.
