Scope and Contents

Commonplace book, circa 1770s, containing excerpts from writings on varied subjects such as scripture and religious dissension, the aurora borealis, medicine, and the invention of printing, and mathematical formulas. Includes excerpts from Gentlemen’s Magazine on the national debt and the history of the game of chess; measurements of the gravity of types of wood; “queries relating to Sound”; and recipes for cider and wine, medical remedies, and household cleaning. There are also excerpts from the memoirs of English politician Edmund Ludlow (1617?-1692), published in 1698-1699, and writings of English clergyman Andrew Burnaby (1732-1812). Additionally contains a copy of a letter from Reverend Ezra Stiles (1727-1795) to Reverend Nathaniel Appleton (1693-1784; Harvard AB 1712) about the settlement of the first church and minister at Cambridge, dated 1772.
