Scope and Contents

The first volume of the supplements to the Harvard College Papers contains mainly eighteenth and nineteenth century handwritten manuscript copies of documents dating from 1636 to 1785 related to the founding of the College, including the College charter and laws, and votes of the Massachusetts General Court; bequests from donors including Henry Webb, William Pennoyer, and Daniel Williams; Corporation votes about President Increase Mather's resignation; memorials lodged by Tutors, led by Nicholas Sever, seeking seats in the Corporation; and papers pertaining to land grants in Lunenberg and Townsend, Massachusetts, to the College from the General Court. Also included are copies of a list of all land granted to the College by Massachusetts from 1636 to 1846, and a list of legacies funding scholarships to the College and appropriations for professorships from 1650 to 1796.

Item numbers were assigned by William Garrott Brown during the creation of his calendar. Some documents originally bound into the volume were removed at an unknown date, resulting in gaps in item numbering. All separated material is listed in the inventory.
