Journal, August 1847 - August 1848

Scope and Contents

This volume covers Mead’s freshman year at Harvard. Described in detail are his entrance examinations, his initial courses (generally referenced as “recitations” and “lectures”), and his social life. While his studies occupied most of his time, Mead found opportunities to visit friends and relatives (including Rutherford B. Hayes, a cousin), attend a production of Hamlet starring Junius Brutus Booth, and witness the funeral procession of John Quincy Adams. Mead also makes passing references to a discussion of slavery among his peers over dinner, and to attending an abolition meeting at Faneuil Hall.
