First Brigade, United States Marine Corps, in Haiti, 1920-1921

Description

Album of black-and-white photographs bound together with a 43 page typewritten summary of the First Marine Brigade's operations from 1915 to 1921 and conditions in Haiti before and after U.S. occupation. Images show aerial and street views of Port-au-Prince, the harbor, and various buildings in the city, including the American legation, customs house, railroad station, and a sugar mill; portraits and general views of Haitians and daily life in Haiti; a Catholic church, mission, and cathedral; Gendarmerie d’Haiti headquarters, the Palace Guard, and Fort National; First Marine Brigade headquarters, barracks, camps, and outposts; and the “anchor of Columbus flagship, the Santa Maria” on exhibit. The album also includes a photographic reproduction of a map of Haiti.

Biographical / Historical

Under the authority of United States President Woodrow Wilson, American occupation of Haiti began when the First Marine Brigade landed at Port-au-Prince on July 28, 1915, to "protect American and foreign" interests. The brigade maintained a permanent establishment in Haiti until U.S. occupation ended August 1934. The First Marine Brigade was reactivated in 1941 and expanded to form the First Marine Division.
