Nicknamed the Harlem Hellfighters and the Black Rattlers, the U.S. Army's 369th Infantry Regiment was an African American unit that saw action in both world wars. Attached to the French Army during World War I, they earned the prestigious Croix de Guerre for gallantry in action during the Meusse-Argonne offensive in September 1918. A white officer, Arthur W. Little served with the regiment in World War I as a major in command of First Battalion. He later became colonel in command of the 369th.
