Records related to family property in Kittery, Maine, 1739/40-1798
Scope and Contents
Samuel Shapleigh's ancestors, led by Alexander Shapleigh of Devonshire, England, settled in Kittery, Maine as early as 1635 and lived there for many generations. Upon the death of his father, Tobias, in 1769, Samuel inherited a parcel of the family's land in Kittery. This series contains documents related to that parcel, as well as other lands in Kittery owned and passed down by the Shapleigh family. Included are legal documents, a surveyors' plan, genealogical notes on the family, and memoranda on various matters. Between 1789 and 1796, Samuel Shapleigh leased his Kittery property to Jeremiah Goodwin, Tobias Hanscom, and Jacob Remich. Their leases are included in this series, as are receipts for purchases made or work completed to improve the property.
