Meteorological observations and correspondence, 1908-1910 Digital

Scope and Contents

This series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, as well as observations on the conditions of the sky, presumably recorded by Boyden Station assistant L.G. Schultz in Hanover, South Africa. The observations are written on loose pages that appear to have been torn from a notebook. There is also a grouping of letters between Schultz and Observatory director Edward Charles Pickering discussing Schultz's weather reports.

Additionally, there are incoming letters addressed to Solon Irving Bailey and Pickering which discuss scientific instruments, equipment, and the possibility of relocating Boyden Station from Peru to South Africa. Correspondents include chemists and druggists Meiring & Quénet, Scottish astronomer David Gill, and the De Villiers Brothers law firm.

Biographical note on L.G. Schultz

According to The History and Work of Harvard Observatory, 1839 to 1927 by Solon I. Bailey, L.G. Schultz was a resident of Hanover, South Africa, who was "engaged as an assistant to aid in the [meteorological] observations in [Hanover]" in 1908, under the supervision of Bailey, throughout 1909. When Bailey returned to Cambridge in December 1909, the Hanover station was "left in the care of Schultz, who carried on observations for several months in 1910. Toward the end observations were irregular and unsatisfactory, and the station was closed."
