Correspondence, 1810-1831 and undated

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the correspondence in this series illustrates John Farrar's attempts to modernize the study of mathematical instruction and natural philosophy (physics) at Harvard University and recounts his supervision and use of the instruments found in the scientific laboratory, known as the Chamber of Natural Philosophy. Principal correspondents represented in this series are Harvard Presidents John T. Kirkland and Samuel Webber. Topics include the selection of French and English mathematics textbooks for use at Harvard, the translation of French mathematics textbooks, the reorganization of the chemistry and mineralogy departments, the College plan to organize instruction at Harvard into departments, with students classified in divisions according to proficiency; and a trip taken by Farrar to Washington, D.C. in January 1816 to examine newly purchased scientific instruments by the United States government. The series also documents Farrar's use of scientific instruments such as a voltaic battery and galvanic apparatus to illustrate the construction and operation of various machines. The letters also refer to routine administrative matters such as the purchase of new instruments for Harvard's scientific collection, teaching appointments, the workload of teachers, the correction of faculty reports, meeting arrangements, repairs to the Philosophy room, and the planning of examinations.
