Papers of Thomas Hubbard, 1729-1773

Scope and Contents

This series contains two deeds of sale for land on what was then known as Jeremy Squam Island (now Westport Island) in Maine; Hubbard purchased two parcels of land from the Boston representatives of the Wiscasset Company at a public auction in August 1769. The original deeds, of which these are manuscript copies, were signed by Nathaniel Tucker, Christopher Minot, Samuel Grant, Thomas Flucker, Thomas Gray, and Nicholas Boylston, as well as a justice of the peace named Williams and Thomas Rice, a registrar. Annotations indicate that the sales were entered into the records for deeds in Lincoln County, Maine on November 4, 1769. The series also contains documents compiled after Hubbard's death in 1773; these list bonds and notes in his estate and include the names of dozens of debtors and the amounts they owed him.
