William Bentley wrote in his diary for September 14, 1793 "A man, by name, Elisha Sylvester, with a recommendation from the Selectmen of Greene [Maine], came to borrow & beg Pamphlets, &c. for the use of the Town, &c. I gave him a load of books useless to me, with a large collection of sermons, & tracts, a bushel full."
