This series contains two letters from Harvard Professor Levi Hedge to William Bentley discussing the examination of Bentley's pupil Andrew Dunlap for readmission to the College, and a letter to Hedge from both Andrew's mother Sarah Dunlap and William Bentley authorizing the examination.

Biographical note of Andrew Dunlap

Andrew Dunlap (1794-1835), United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts (1829-1835), was born in Salem, Mass. on September 21, 1794, a son of James and Sarah Stone Dunlap. Andrew Dunlap matriculated at Harvard in 1809, but withdrew in 1810 on the recommendation of the Harvard Corporation due to bad behavior. Bentley tutored Dunlap for a year, and on March 22, 1811, he was readmitted to the College. He received an AB from Harvard in 1813. He practiced law in Boston, and in 1829, was appointed the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. Dunlap died on July 27, 1835.

Biographical note of Levi Hedge

Levi Hedge (1766-1844), a Harvard Professor, was born in Warwick, Massachusetts on April 19, 1766. He received an AB from Harvard in 1792 and an AM in 1795. Hedge taught at Harvard for thirty-seven years, as a tutor from 1795 to 1810, as College Professor of Logic and Metaphysics from 1810 to 1827, and as Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity from 1827 to 1832. Hedge died in Warwick on January 3, 1844.
