The Butler regularly faced the problem of delinquent debtors, and the Corporation took various measures to encourage timely payment. At their August 11, 1777 meeting, the Corporation resolved that the Butler should "specify distinctly how much of the charge is for liquor & how much is for groceries." In 1788, the Corporation ordered the Butler to notify parents of their children's debts after three months of nonpayment.
