Biographical / Historical

Jonathan Hastings, College Steward from 1750 to 1779, was born on January 1, 1708/9 in Cambridge, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1730 and an AM in 1733. It was rancid butter purchased by Hastings that prompted the students' "Bad Butter Rebellion" of 1766. Hastings resigned from the position on November 3, 1778, but continued as Steward until December 1779 when a successor was found. He died on February 16, 1783.
