Scope and Contents

This subseries contains votes of the Harvard Corporation, correspondence, legal documents, financial accounts, memorials and petitions. Topics documented include George Washington’s election as the first President of the United States; honorary degrees for John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton; John Adams’ plans to educate his son, John Quincy Adams, at Harvard; a proposal to create a public infirmary for the poor in Massachusetts; rules for the Hancock Professorship of the Hebrew and other Oriental Languages; instruments purchased for the scientific apparatus; European politics, including the French Revolution and the Priestley riots; and donations of books for the library.
