Personal papers, 1754-1785

Scope and Contents

This series contains miscellaneous personal papers touching on different aspects of Hancock’s relationship with Harvard College. The materials offer glimpses into Hancock’s influence as a benefactor and public supporter of the institution. While this series does not document Hancock’s tenure as treasurer, it does reflect on his strained relationship with the University afterwards. Included is a letter to his sister Mary, written during his senior year at Harvard, a request for leniency towards a Harvard student, an address to the Harvard Corporation, and correspondence between Hancock and President Joseph Willard.
