Scope and Contents
This subseries touches on Eliot's last years as President of Harvard University. It reflects his position as an elder statesman and a recognized authority on educational matters. It not only addresses Harvard University business but also includes a fair amount of correspondence with various organizations and associations documenting Eliot's involvement in social reform and philanthropic activities. These letters shed light on Eliot’s opinions on a wide variety of topics. Some of these topics include immigration reform, taxation, race relations, municipal reform, hygiene and health, sports, labor and business relations, women's suffrage, and education. The letters in this subseries also document Eliot's travels throughout the Southern United States in 1908-1909 and in the Western United States in 1902 and 1908.
This subseries is comprised of news clippings, reprints, meeting minutes, invitations, circulars, by-laws, pamphlets, telegrams, reports, flyers, brochures, posters, sketches, lists, notes, programs, postcards, forms, receipts, applications, itineraries, and calling cards.
