This subseries consists mostly of incoming correspondence documenting the first twenty-five years of Eliot's administration of Harvard University.
Documents in this subseries are circulars, by-laws, memoranda, news clippings, lists, reports, petitions, telegrams, pamphlets, brochures, ledgers, sketches, and letters.

The correspondence in this subseries was arranged chronologically in a mix of A-Z letter files and subject files upon its accession in the early 1900s. The archivist maintained this order during the 2006 reprocessing of this collection.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The material in this subseries was deposited in the Harvard College Library in two different lots (1894, 1909).

The two lots were merged and arranged chronologically by library staff in the ca. 1910.
