Harold Clarence Ernst, doctor, was born on July 31, 1855, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Andrew H. and Sarah (Otis) Ernst. He received his Harvard AB in 1876 and his MD in 1880; he received his AM in 1884. Ernst practiced medicine in Jamaica Plain until 1895 and also served as out-patient physician at Massachusetts General Hospital until 1900. He taught bacteriology at the Harvard Medical School from 1885 until his death in 1922. Editor of the Journal of Medical Research from 1896 to 1922, Ernst also served as director of scholarships in the Harvard Medical School in 1922.
