The Black Teacher Archive (BTA) began as an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded grant co-principally investigated by Dr. Jarvis Givens of Harvard Graduate School of Education and Dr. Imani Perry of Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In fall 2020, the co-pi's hired Micha Broadnax to serve as the Project Manager. The Black Teacher Archive is a post-custodial digital collection initiative. The items is this collection are largely in the custodianship of non-Harvard repositories. With over 65 contributing repositories, the Black Teacher Archive seeks to create a centralized access point to review items created by Black educator organizations. The BTA has required the assistance and enlistment of local expertise:
In Gutman Library - Carla Lillvik, Rebecca Martin, Alex R. Hodges, Lindsay Whitacre, Carol Ketner, Te-Yi Lee, and Myanne Krivoshey.
In Harvard Imaging Services - Mingtao Zhao, Bill Comstock, Maggie E. Hale, Robert Heintz, Katherine Sweeney, and David Remington.
Across Harvard Library - Vanessa Venti, Robin Wendler, Michael Vandermillen, Kate Bowers, and Jennifer Weintraub.
Research Assistants- Abigail Goldstein, MarQuis Bullock, Farah Afify, and Luna Pham.
About Colored Teacher Associations: Colored Teacher Associations (CTAs) are a historical reference to Black educator organizations in the United States that began forming prior to the Civil War, and a national body of these organizations formed in 1903. These organizations primarily in southern and bordering states, began to publish journals at the national and state levels in the 1920s. Colored Teacher Associations were the primary professional organizations for African American teachers in the 20th century United States, and they were essential to the political, intellectual, and cultural terrain of the black civil rights struggle during this era.
