Harlow Shapley’s (1885 – 1972) completed his PhD on double-star astronomy at Princeton, and soon afterwards, he accepted a position at the Mount Wilson Observatory. In 1918, Shapley published his findings on the dimensions of our Galaxy, and in 1920, he participated in the “Great Debate” against Herbert D. Curtis, where the scale of the universe became a question of public interest. Less than a year later, Shapley accepted the Directorship at the Harvard College Observatory after the death of Edward C. Pickering. During his time at the H.C.O., Shapley helped to modernize the observatory’s equipment, emphasized the importance of public education within the observatory’s mission, and established the graduate school of astronomy at Harvard University. Shapley retired from the position in 1952.
