Materials digitized for this collection include anti-slavery and anti-segregation petitions held by the Massachusetts Archives, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Petitions were digitized from the passed resolves and acts, unpassed House and Senate legislation, the Council files, unpassed legislation relating to Indian affairs, and the Massachusetts Archives Collection. Not included in the digital collection are non-petition documents, which can be found at the Massachusetts Archives.

The legislative records at the Massachusetts Archives, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, encompass the files of the colonial General Court (1629-1780), the Provincial Congress (1774-1775), and the state General Court (1780-present): Petitions, orders, reports, messages, bills. Unenacted legislation and enacted statutes and resolves. House and Senate dockets, roll calls, and journals. Committee and legislative commission hearing and background files.

Processing Information

The Digital Archive of Massachusetts Anti-Slavery and Anti-Segregation Petitions is the product of ongoing efforts to digitize petitions from the Massachusetts Archives, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The digital facsimiles of documents from the Massachusetts Archives were created beginning in January 2013 under the National Endowment for the Humanities grant PW-51056-12, A Digital Archive of Massachusetts Anti-Slavery and Anti-Segregation Petitions, with funding and support from the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University, the Harvard University Libraries and Imaging Services Department at Widener Library, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. The Massachusetts Archives agreed to make the materials available for digitization and to allow Harvard to present the images online within Harvard's digital library infrastructure. These materials were digitized by Imaging Services and made available through the Page Delivery Service (PDS) with cataloging at the item level in the IQSS Dataverse.
