1.5 linear feet (5 boxes)Correspondence between F. Holland Day and others regarding the fund raising campaign for an American memorial to John Keats. Includes letters from Edmund Gosse, Louise Imogen Guiney, Professor Charles Eliot Norton, and many others including Henry James, Professor George Edward Woodberry, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, the Kelmscott Press, etc... and also contains drafts, proofs, and final copies of subscription letters, invitations, and programs printed by William Morris of the Kelmscott Press. Includes letters to F. Holland Day relating to his research on John Keats's life (1872-1894). Also includes many letters to and from Amy Lowell (1921-1925) concerning Keats, letters to Louis Arthur Holman, and letters from subscribers to the Keats memorial in Hampstead Church, 1890-1894. Most letters include envelopes.
Biographical / Historical
Fred Holland Day was an American publisher, "art" photographer, and leader of the aesthetic movement in fin-de-siècle Boston. Day was an enthusiastic collector of John Keats and he led the campaign (was the secretary of the American Memorial Committee) which resulted in the American memorial to John Keats (a bust of the poet) being placed in Hampstead Church, England, on July 16, 1894.
