.5 linear feet (6 volumes in 4 volume enclosures)These volumes of transcripts of manuscript and printed ballads were produced by Rollins during 1919-1920, on a Harvard Sheldon Traveling Fellowship. At this time he was a professor with New York University. He copied English ballad manuscripts, as well as printed ballad broadsides, at various libraries in Britain, including the British Museum, the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford,Pepys Library of Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge, and the Manchester Free Library. The original manuscripts from the British Museum were later transferred to the British Library, retaining the same manuscript numbers listed in Rollins' transcripts.
Biographical / Historical
Hyder Edward Rollins (1889-1958) was born in Abilene, Texas. In 1910 he received a B.A. from Southwestern University, an M.A. from the University of Texas in 1912, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1917. In 1919 he went to Europe on a Harvard Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and in 1920 he was appointed assistant professor at New York University, becoming a full professor four years later. In 1926 he returned to Harvard, later succeeding George Lyman Kittredge as the Gurney Professor of English (1939-1956). Among his scholarly interests was the study of English broadside ballads.
