Includes catalogs, printing examples, and notes from printers, publishers, and typographers.

Biographical / Historical

A large portion of the collection was given by William Bentinck-Smith in 1969. The balance was collected by the Printing and Graphic Arts Department of the Houghton Library which received publications directly from practitioners of typography probably from its beginnings. Other material was likely received or solicited by the first curator of the department, Philip Hofer.

Material in the collection came from creators who gave it to collectors including William Bentinck-Smith and Philip Hofer.
