Collection is comprised of 306 black and white photographs in two disbound albums of African American performers compiled by a musician on tour with musician Harold “Dirty” Ward. 116 photographs show performers; only one shows a performance. Some of the images were taken by Harold Ward. The tour with the Louis Douglas revue, “Louisiana”, is covered in one album concerning travel in Europe and North Africa in 1928-1930; this album shows African American performers off stage, and it includes what may be the only extant image of “Louisiana”. The other album shows the Ward family presumably in Chicago in the 1930s-1950s. All the earliest photographs are captioned.

Biographical / Historical

Harold “Dirty” Ward played trombone and saxophone for shows put on by Louis Douglas and toured with Douglas's review "Louisiana”. The nickname "Dirty" was given because he had freckles.

Born in Philadelphia, Louis Douglas (1889-1939) began performing in Europe as early as 1903. He was a dancer and became better known when he served as assistant director, choreographer and lead male dancer in 1925 for “La Revue Nègre” in which his dance partner was Josephine Baker. Douglas put together “Louisiana” In 1929, in which the performers may have been known as “The Black Flowers.” (source: dealer's description)
