Biographical / Historical

Firman Andrews Houghton (1919-1985) was a poet, playwright, parodist, and editor. He was born to evangelist William Henry Houghton and Elizabeth Andrews; he served in the Navy during World War II. He was married to poet Ruth Whitman from 1959-1964 with whom he had a son, David; Ruth and Firman together published the literary magazine, Audience. He was subsequently married to Mimi Nixon Houghton. Once director of the Poets Theater in Cambridge (Mass.), he was also president of the New England Poetry Club which honors him with The Firman Houghton Award.
