The title of the final published version of each play is used, ensuring that different versions of the same play will appear together. Variant titles which appear on the piece are described in the notes, and cross-references have been provided as appropriate.

Processing Information

Tennessee Williams was a very prolific playwright. He also continued to revise many of his plays long after they were produced and published. He frequently changed the titles of his plays, as well as the names of the characters. He often did not date or paginate his drafts and revisions. The papers acquired by Houghton were received in a very disorganized state, with loose pages of dozens of different plays often interleaved together without any identification.

The identification of plays performed or published during Williams's lifetime is generally not difficult, but variants of some character names and titles have been noted below. For lesser-known plays, the names of characters and occasionally a brief plot synopsis have been added, which may help researchers to identify these works as drafts of better-known plays.
