General note

The letter dated [1777] Sept. 28 concerns the first performance of More's tragedy Percy. Samuel Johnson is at least mentioned in almost every letter, and most of the 1779 Aug. 4 letter is devoted to a review of his Prefaces to the Lives of the Poets. The letters discuss a number of other well-known mutual friends in detail, including Edmund Burke (1774 Nov. 29 and [no year] Nov. 5), David Garrick (mentioned in most of the letters, especially following his death in 1779), and Elizabeth Robinson Montagu (1774 Sept. 10, 1774 Nov. 29). More also discusses the work of a wide variety of other authors, including James Beattie (1776 Aug. 18), Fanny Burney (undated, not before 1778, re Evelina), Edward Gibbon (1776 June), Joseph Priestley (1774 Nov. 29), and Phillis Wheatley (1774 Sept. 10). The attempt by John Aitken to burn the city of Bristol (England) is also discussed in a letter written circa 1777 Feb.

In green quarter-morocco tray case.
