General note

Arranged in alphabetical order by the last name of the subject, this series includes both studio portraits (indentified as "Portraits") and less formal candid photographs (identified as "Prints"). The formats are equally divided between 11x14" black/white prints and 8x10" prints, and there are a few 35mm color slides and black/negatives of various sizes. The earliest are from Jeffry's days as a member of the Fort Dearborn-Chicago Camera Club, when she photographed celebrities such as Lena Horne and Peggy Lee; many are the result of her work for the New York Times Arts and Leisure pages; and some are from her later work as a portrait photographer in New York and Albuquerque (in most cases contact sheets only; negatives and prints not present). In a few cases Jeffry included a newsclipping with her prints, and these have been retained; for other names the collection contains only published flyers (mostly musicians for a series of publicity flyers, 1981-1982). Unidentified photographs are filed at the end of Series 4.

Part of the Houghton Library Repository

Houghton Library is Harvard College's principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, archives, and more. Houghton Library's collections represent the scope of human experience from ancient Egypt to twenty-first century Cambridge. With strengths primarily in North American and European history, literature, and culture, collections range in media from printed books and handwritten manuscripts to maps, drawings and paintings, prints, posters, photographs, film and audio recordings, and digital media, as well as costumes, theater props, and a wide range of other objects. Houghton Library has historically focused on collecting the written record of European and Eurocentric North American culture, yet it holds a large and diverse number of primary sources valuable for research on the languages, culture and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Houghton Library’s Reading Room is free and open to all who wish to use the library’s collections.
