Grineau, Bryan de, 1882-1957. Foreigners in a Foreign Land : pencil drawing, 1940

Scope and Contents

Original work by British artist Bryan de Grineau depicting a Cypriot mule company watering their animals; dated 1940, France.

Note verso in de Grineau's hand:

"Several hundred Cypriots picked from the thousands who volunteered their services to Britain on the outbreak of war have been formed into a mule transport corps of the R.A.S.C. The mules are pack animals & are invaluable for taking heavy loads across country under bad conditions. The men speak a mixture of Greek & Turkish & do not understand a word of English or French. They come from the hot sun of the Mediterranean so the bitter weather made conditions very hard for them. They are now quite acclimatised & are most cheerful & happy despite their strange surroundings & their unaccustomed duties. Thanks to the skill & patience of their R.A.S.C. officers and their general adaptability they have become a most smart & useful section of the B.E.I. in France."
