General note

Series 1 is made up of HTDW’s diaries and her memoir My Homes in Russia, 1898-1920, which incorporates the text of the diaries, as well as other autobiographical writings and accompanying materials. Includes the original version of the diary which HTDW kept while living in Yalta during the Russian civil war from 1918-1920 in a series of three small notebooks, as well as a subsequently revised and amplified second version of the diary, in a single hardbound notebook (140 pages, circa 1920-1925). Also includes two versions of the memoir: an early handwritten and typewritten draft (undated), and a later, finalized typescript (380 pages, circa 1929). "Country Life in Northern Russia" (undated typescript, 19 pages plus 3-page list of "Photographs to Illustrate Article on Russia") is a free-standing memoir fragment apparently meant for separate publication. The 1935-1950 diary entries were made while HTDW was living in Washington, D.C. Materials enclosed with the hardbound diary include correspondence with HTDW’s sister Edine Tisdel de Moussot and sister-in-law Ol’ga Aleksandrovna Krshivitskii, as well as other letters and numerous remittance receipts for food packages sent by HTDW to relatives and acquaintances in Russia after 1920 via the American Relief Administration. Also included are explanatory notes by HTDW for the intended recipient, Anne Moussot Humstone (1915-1990), who was Edine’s daughter and HTDW’s niece. As indicated by the annotations, HTDW intended these materials to be read by Anne Moussot in the year 2000 and subsequently destroyed.
