Scope and Contents

Copy of typescript letter from John Thacher to Beatrix Farrand reports that Mildred Bliss agrees with the wisdom of seeding over the Herbaceous Border and Herb Garden beds for the duration of the war and with James Bryce’s suggestion to plant vegetables in the East Lawn next summer. He reports that Mildred Bliss is well again and appears less tired than she had a few weeks ago while packing, repacking, and sorting over items. He expresses uncertainty regarding the North Vista wall, particularly at the north end., but highly approves of the walls for the Cedar Terrace, the Bench Terrace, and up to the point where the grills are to begin on the east and west wall on the last terrace. He reports that Steinbraker's men are proceeding with the work although they have not yet received the final elevations from Ruth Havey. He questions the use of brick versus stone in the design of the North Vista walls and regrets the distance between them since he feels confident that, if he could just talk to her, he would find clarity in his thinking. He apologizes for his indecision and requests her patience with him.
