Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature from W. Warren Edwards to Alden Hopkins, Secretary of the ASLA Committee on Dumbarton Oaks Garden Scholarship expresses his appreciation to the committee for selecting him as a Dumbarton Oaks Garden Scholarship recipient. He hopes "in the future it will be possible to offer an additional two or three scholarships during June and July. The program at Dumbarton Oaks could be under the direction of a practising landscape architect, perhaps the senior resident landscape architect. Since the student is exposed to theory during the academic year I would advise a man in actual practice be engaged to handle the program. It might deal, among other things, with current problems in landscae architecture and the approach to them and their solution by men in professionl practice; programs planned individually or as group efforts by the students or projects suggested by the resident landscape architect. I feel it would be worthwhile if the scholarship recipients were allowed to participate in the design of additions to, or changes in, the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. The consultant landscape architect would direct this portion of the program when such changes were planned." He goes on to say that the scholarships should require a half day of work in the maintenance of the gardens. It would take advantage of Matthew Kearney's broad and intimate knowledge of the practical handling of plants, their requirements and uses. The remainder of the month could be spent in one or a combination of the ways previously mentioned in addition to time in the library when it is open during the day. Personal and group projects could be continued in the evening. He advises the scholarship recipients travel together in the District of Columbia area for added stimulus and reduced personal expenses. He expresses his gratitude to Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss through whose efforts the scholarship was made available and Matthew Kearney and Donald Smith for their patient and intelligent guidance.
