Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature from Alden Hopkins to the members of the Dumbarton Oaks Garden Advisory Committee, Michael Rapuano, Robert Patterson, Bradford Williams, Leon Zach and the Dumbarton Oaks Director, John Thacher. He encloses two blackline prints covering the reconstruction of the Camellia Garden (96-03, revised 1-13-[19]59) and the completion of the new planting of the Ellipse (96-07, revised 1-15-[19]59). G. Morris Steinbraker & Son of Georgetown provided an estimate of $3,365.00 to complete the work, but it did not include rearrangement of Camillia plants, additional planting of bulbs, ground cover and evergreens. Hopkins tells them considerable rebuilding of the loosely constructed wall, addition of drainage, excavation of walks, stone bed edging, cap to wall, etc. needs to be done. The proposed planting will have to be adjusted on the ground because of the existing growth. Alden Hopkin's planting plan for the Ellipse is involve screening and color and includes plants such as Japanese holly hedge, dogwoods, hornbeam hedge, spring bulbs with a periwinkle border, and spring bulbs in the ivy ground color.
