Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature from Beatrix Farrand to John Thacher tells her Robert Patterson might find it advisable to spend one day at Dumbarton Oaks without her and Mildred Bliss, so he can do some preliminary study. She thanks him for telling her when Robert and Mildred Bliss intend to depart. She thinks they should wait on the Terrior until a cleaning out and restoration of the planting can be done. She also thinks if Mildred Bliss wants a wall dial [sundial] there is space available, but she would regret putting a sundial in the middle of the herb garden unless it was first rate old one. The completion of Planting Record book is somewhat indefinite, but most of it is finished in rough form for consulatation or consideration of any changes in the planting. Bryce's order of perennials at this time of year seems to her odd, but $20.00 is not a deafening sum, and he probably needed to yield to Bryce's insistence. Robert Patterson and Beatrix will recommend bulb orders on this next journey. She feels the forcing bulbs for the greenhouse ought to be ordered from the Northwest as they used to be, and the tulips from Bryce's source this year. The suggestion of doing over the Herbaceous Border must be taken into consideration in any bulb planting, so would be good if it could be replanting next autumn.
