Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature and postscript from Beatrix Farrand to John Thacher, Lieutenant Commander, U.S.N. thanks him for the nice letter. She reports talking with Mildred Bliss last Sunday and hearing her plans for the next months. She says she was both relieved and disappointed that he didn't think it essential for her to come to Dumbarton Oaks this Autumn. Although Mildred Bliss felt that Beatrix's journey to Dumbarton Oaks was advisable. She asks him and James Bryce to keep her informed if it would be wise to come, and she will do her best to be there. She tells him it is a relief to hear that the paving of the Green Garden does not have to undertaken at the immediate moment. She would like to know what he and Mildred Bliss are thinking with regard to the tree question for this space. She would like to hear from James Bryce about the little oak trees and will continue to bother Thacher and Bryce until some are planted. She is trying to think where the walk is which has been paved with crushed "agate" between the greenhouse and the pool on Crab Hill, and where the steps have been taken out which interfere with the lawn mower procession. If he and Mildred Bliss are satisfied about it along with cutting out some of the big apple trees in order to leave others to develop then the decision must be right.
