Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature and postscript from Beatrix Farrand to Mildred Bliss discusses plants to be thinned or replaced, new paths and stairs to construct, and a proposed redesign for the Herbaceous Border hedges at Dumbarton Oaks. Beatrix offers a suggestion for steps to replace the dangerous Goat Trail. John Thacher, Robert Patterson, and Beatrix agree that the boxwood on the Beech Terrace has far outgrown what it should be in scale, and it should be replaced with much smaller edging to add "dignity to the great beech and also could give height to the Green Garden wall. James Bryce has an offer for the boxwood, and should be replaced this Autumn. Beatrix prefers the sundial be placed on the south wall of the main building below what used to be Mildred's bedroom rather than the center of the herb garden. She has seen the herb garden space with a epergne-like vase which could be filled with plants or be a bird bath. She mentions the first publication of the Reef Point Gardens bulletin. The Planting Record Book will be ready soon. The main part of the work is done, but it awaits correction. Robert Patterson will bring it to Washington, D.C. when he goes next which is October 15-16, 1946.
