Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature and postscript from Beatrix Farrand to Mildred Bliss discusses the refreshing change of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden board since Mildred Bliss gifted funds to the organization. A fund has been established for the use by the director, Maunsell van Rensselaer. Maunsell has been ill lately having to take time off to recover. Now he is taking an additional 3 months of paid leave on doctor's advice. Beatrix Farrand thanks Mildred Bliss for "housing us so perfectly in the little cottage where we have had four winters together." She is referring to spending winters with Max Farrand at the Valley Club of Montecito. An added typescript postscript tells her Mr. Louis Lancaster made the suggestion that someone could be trained as an assistant to the director and suggested a student, Mr. Tucker as he gets along with Van Rensselaer very well. If Mildred agrees, Beatrix may ask her for a small contribution toward his salary during a try-out period. He might be useful during some of the time Van Rensselaer is away.
