Letter from Ellen W. Johnston to Mrs. Bliss, April 1940
Letter from Ellen W. Johnston to Mrs. Bliss, April 1940

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Ellen W. Johnston to Mildred Bliss thanks her for "two afternoons of enchantment in your gardens, such unbelievable beauty, but no matter how beautiful a garden is, the creator is it's main spring, and it was a joy to have that little visit with you on Saturday." She shares with Mildred the garden plans for the Garden Club of America meeting. No private cars will be allowed to go to any of the gardens. That seems to be an ultimatum. On Tuesday the 7th, the buses will leave the Lord Baltimore Hotel at two, some going to Doughoregan [Manor, Maryland] and Glenelg [Maryland] and others to Belmont [Elkridge, Maryland] returning by six. On Thursday there will be a luncheon at the Elkridge Kennels followed by visits to gardens in that vicinity such as The Pibbs, Rusty Rocks [Home of Edward and Luella Bouton], etc. with teas at Hampton [Mansion, Baltimore, Maryland], Brooklandville [Maryland] and Homewood [Maryland]. On Friday the 10th, the annual meeting will be at the Lord Baltimore Hotel at eleven which will be followed by luncheon in private houses and then tours through the Green Spring, Worthington and Dulany Valleys stopping at some of the interesting places and teas at some of the newer lovely places in the Dulany Valley. They have the head quarters in Apt. 3A in The Warrington where all the information is available, but she hopes this will give Mildred a birds-eye view. Johnston hopes to see Mildred at some of these places. Letter marked as received April 20, 1940.
