Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Edith Hoyt to Mildred Bliss dated November 25th, 1940. Hoyt tells Mildred Bliss "It was most kind of you to send for the pictures, and there is no hurry about returning them. I only wish I could have put into them the peace and poetry which I experienced in your garden and even a little of the joy I had in painting them. I appreciate more than I can say your graciousness in giving me this great pleasure, and something beyond that, something intangible which refreshed my spirit. With warm thanks, believe me, dear Mrs. Bliss." Copy of typescript response from Mildred Bliss to Miss Edith Hoyt says "It mortifies me to think how long ago it was that you gave us the pleasure if [of] seeing your charming pictures of the garden at Dumbarton Oaks, but you will understand, of course, that this was a difficult and harrassed period for me and will forgive the delay of my thanks. I am so glad you enjoyed painting in the garden and envy you the facility to translate your moods into colors. With many friendly messages and with the hope that this dark new year ahead may deal kindly with you."
