Letter from Ruth M. Havey, The Mayflower, Washington, D.C. to Mrs. Bliss, August 19, 1956

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Ruth Havey to Mildred Bliss telling her that the "vision of loveliness" she wanted in the Arbor Terrace will be there with a few weeks to spare. The foundation for the scrolls is in and the general proportions promist to work out well; the drainage and grading are on pace; the shop drawings are finished; the Doria is to arrive; and the shop is cleared to start cutting. The planting has been mapped and Mr. Kearney will travel somewhere south of her to locate it. Havey lists plants for use on the wall, for shrubs, and potted plants in center of terrace. She reports that Mr. Thacher is away, but Mr. Kearnery feels sure things are in tune with his desires. The gilding of the main R street gate is a "beautiful piece of work." Mr. Kearney, Mr. Russell, and Havey all agree that the other gate looks down right dingy which Mildred would not like. Havey has given the order to do that, but it will need the temperature of 70 degrees to apply the gold leaf, so will be postponed until next summer. Havey wishes Mildred Bliss were at Dumbarton Oaks to see it take shape. A quick decision on the design of the seat at the east wall so that the foundation can go in will be done and also get Mr. Lank started on wood tubs for larger shrubs [in the Arbor Terrace].
