Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Marvin C. Ross to Mildred Bliss to share his work on Byzantine enamels and project as outlined to the Bollinger Foundation. He says that since more enamals are dated than any other minor arts except manuscripts, this corpus and history which he has included may turn out to be of great importance in the study of Byzantine art.

Once the enamals are finished, Marvin wants to go on and write his history of Byzantine jewellery and glyptics. He tells Mildred that since her and Robert [Bliss] have been great connoisseurs and collectors in both these fields, he would like to talk with them both about it one day. He has new and interesting material, both jewellery and glypics and naturally the Dumbarton Oaks Collection will play a significant role in book books.

A typescript copy of "A History and Corpus of Byzantine Enamelling" prepared for the Bollinger Foundation with his outline of the book project; places that he should visit and photographs that are needed to complete the book; and work already completed is included.
